George Papatheodorou | Earth and Planetary Sciences | Research Excellence Award

University of Patras, Oceanus-Lab, Department of Geology | Greece

Prof. Dr. George Papatheodorou is a distinguished Professor of Geological and Environmental Oceanography whose career has significantly advanced the scientific understanding of marine systems, seabed processes, and environmental change. Serving at the Department of Geology at the University of Patras, he has held several key academic leadership roles, including Vice Head and later Head of the Geology Department, and subsequently Dean of the School of Natural Sciences across two consecutive terms. As Director of the Laboratory of Marine Geology and Physical Oceanography (Oceanus-Lab), he has led pioneering research initiatives that integrate marine geophysics, marine sedimentology, marine geochemistry, and geological oceanography to investigate active faults, submarine gravitational sediment movements, seabed fluid flows, and the dynamics of marine and lacustrine environments. His work extends to critical interdisciplinary domains such as marine pollution, with a particular focus on marine litter, coastal erosion processes, hypoxic and anoxic landlocked basins, and the mapping of marine and freshwater habitats. Over the course of his academic trajectory, he has contributed extensively as Lecturer, Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, and full Professor, shaping both research and education in marine sciences. His early professional experience includes significant appointments in chemical oceanography, fisheries–aquaculture technology, and oceanography teaching roles, reflecting the breadth of his expertise across aquatic and marine disciplines. He is also recognized for his contributions to marine geoarchaeology, offering scientific insights into submerged cultural landscapes and coastal heritage. Through decades of scholarship, leadership, and mentorship, his work has provided valuable frameworks for understanding geological processes, environmental risks, and anthropogenic impacts on marine ecosystems, positioning him as a leading figure in the field of marine geology and environmental oceanography.
