Additionally, she has extensive experience in the production, isolation, and purification of bacterial exopolysaccharides (EPSs). Dr. Abdelnasser is skilled in identifying EPS-producing bacterial strains with high rates of cell death through 16S rRNA gene sequencing. She can assess the in vitro cytotoxicity of partially purified EPSs extracted from marine bacterial strains using in vitro cytotoxic assays. To confirm the proposed chemical structures of EPSs, she analyzes their infrared (IR) spectra, mass spectra, and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) data. Dr. Abdelnasser is adept at isolating RNA and employing real-time PCR to assess the apoptotic activity of promising EPSs, followed by statistical analysis of the PCR data. Dr. Salma Abdelnasser has led several impactful research projects as a Principal Investigator. One of her notable projects is titled “Investigating the Role of miRNAs on Apoptotic and Angiogenic Pathways in Hepatocellular Carcinoma Cells Treated with Bacillus sonorensis Exopolysaccharide (EPS-1),” which runs from 2022 to 2024 and is funded by the National Research Centre, Giza, Egypt (grant number: 13060123). This study aims to explore the potential synergistic effects of miRNA and EPS-1 on pro-apoptotic and anti-angiogenic genes. Hybrid anticancer drugs are emerging as promising therapeutic options that can effectively address the limitations of conventional anticancer drugs. This project seeks to demonstrate the positive role of combining miRNA and EPS-1 in modulating key genes involved in the development, progression, and metastasis of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Given that the expression of microRNAs is often altered in cancer cells, and that exopolysaccharides (EPSs) are gaining attention as a novel source for cancer treatment, this research holds significant potential for advancing cancer therapeutics.

Prof. Ahmad Daryani has conducted several significant research projects focusing on parasitic infections and public health. His projects include a study on the prevalence of intestinal parasites in a healthy village in Ardabil city, Iran, before environmental sanitation was implemented. He also investigated the prevalence of intestinal parasitic infections among primary school students in Ardabil. His research extended to a survey of Sarcocystis infection in slaughtered sheep and buffaloes in Ardabil and a seroepidemiology study of toxoplasmosis in women referred to the Ardabil laboratory of the health center for medical examinations before marriage. Additionally, Prof. Daryani explored immune responses against excreted/secreted antigens of Toxoplasma gondii tachyzoites in a murine model. He conducted a study on the prevalence of hydatid cysts in slaughtered animals in Ardabil and another seroepidemiology study of toxoplasmosis in Roudsar city. He also examined the prevalence of Blastocystis hominis infection in primary school children in Ardabil. Furthermore, he assessed the fertility and viability rate of protoscoleces of hydatid cysts in sheep and cattle slaughtered in Ardabil. In 2002, Dr. Sasidharan embarked on a project using genomic approaches to explore seaweed genes and natural product discovery. This early initiative set the stage for his subsequent research endeavors. As a Principal Investigator, he secured a USM INSENTIF research grant amounting to RM5,000.00, which funded his project from February 24, 2009, to February 25, 2010. This project was successfully completed, marking an important milestone in his research career. Dr. Sasidharan then received a USM Short Term Grant of RM34,096.00 for his study on the anti-Candida activity, mode of action, and biofilm prevention by Cassia spectabilis methanol leaf extract, specifically targeting Candida albicans. This project ran from August 1, 2009, to July 31, 2011, and was completed successfully. Furthering his research on natural products, he investigated the antiparasitic properties and conducted scanning and transmission electron microscope studies on the root extract of Eurycoma longifolia Jack. This project was supported by a USM Research Universiti Grant of RM102,062.00 and was carried out from November 1, 2009, to March 31, 2012, culminating in valuable findings. Since February 2023, Dr. Wahedi has served as an Associate Professor at the National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST) in Islamabad.
