He earned his doctorate (summa cum laude) in 1998 from the Biochemical Institute 2 at the University of Heidelberg. Following a decade of research and teaching at the University Medical Center Mannheim (UMM), he completed his habilitation. In 2013, he re-habilitated at the Medical Faculty of Goethe University Frankfurt and was appointed as an extraordinary professor in 2015. He rejoined UMM Mannheim in 2017 while continuing his teaching at the University Hospital Frankfurt. In 2023, he was appointed as a Visiting Professor at Baku State University, Azerbaijan.
